Rural Village House
Situated in the most idyllic, rural spot, close to the South Downs, it was essential that the garden felt part of its natural surroundings but provided some intimacy, privacy and shelter from the elements. This was done by planting 2 curved parallel hornbeam hedges which enclosed a circular lawn and densely planted mixed borders. The hornbeam hedging created a natural boundary and transition from garden to the countryside beyond. The use of grasses and a cacophony of loose, willowy perennials and shrubs created the impression of a natural, wild garden rather than one which had been carefully cultivated! This was further enhanced by planting a small wild flower meadow. The hard landscaping materials used were old stone, wood and reclaimed bricks again to enable the house and garden to meld with the natural environment.
